Maya Kadakia has been dancing her whole life. She began dancing with her family doing Gujarati (Indian) and Jewish folk dances. Then she moved on to ballet, tap and jazz. As an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, she was introduced to African dance and fell in love with it. She is now a life-long student. Maya has attended many classes and conferences in the U.S., but her most important studying has taken place in Africa (Guinea summer 2005, Guinea winter 2005-2006, and Guinea and Mali June 2006 to mid-July 2007). Her teachers include: Tyrone King, Marie Camara, Alassane (Papin) Camara, Ballet Tayeli, and Viex Djara. Maya is a vibrant performer and a patient instructor. She teaches through the University of Wisconsin-Madison Dance Department in additon to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Continuing Studies and drop-in classes. She continues to study, teach, and perform as much as possible. Currently, she is a member of Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble, a Madison-based African Drum and Dance group, and Kikeh Mato, an Afro-pop group, both under the direction of Mandjou Mara.
